It’s a big ask to expect Nacho Elvira to record his first European Tour win in a tournament of this stature but there have been four different Spanish winners in the last eight years and the winner isn’t always the obvious name.
The 30-year-old had a couple of near misses last year and was in contention at the half-way stage of last years Desert Classic before a pair of weekend 72s dropped him to T11.
Solid throughout the bag, last season he ranked in the top-60 for scoring average, driving distance and GIRs on tour. Putting is the problem and has prevented him getting over the line but he did win four times on the Challenge Tour so isn’t one to write off from a win perspective.
A T20 in the SA Open is tempered by a missed cut in Abu Dhabi but i’ve seen enough from Nacho to suggest he will pop-up at some stage this season; almost certainly at a good price.
